Raipur, 28 December 2022/ ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is being celebrated across the country to commemorate 75 years of India’s independence. A Series of programmes are being organized as a part of the celebrations. In this sequence, under a special initiative, the Central Government has proposed to give special remission to certain categories of prisoners and to release them on 26 January 2023 and 15 August 2023.
Chhattisgarh Governor Ms. Anusuiya Uikey has approved the proposal to release 42 convicted prisoners of the state on the occasion of Republic Day, January 26, 2023, in compliance with the decision of the government. The prisoners to be released include two women prisoners who are above 50 years of age and have served 50 per cent of their total prison sentence. According to Article 161 in The Constitution Of India, the Governor has the power to grant pardons, etc, and to suspend, remit or commute sentences in certain cases.
Meanwhile, the purpose of releasing prisoners on special remission on the occasion of ‘Azadi Amrit Mahotsav’ is to ensure discipline and good conduct in the jail and to provide an opportunity for the possibility of early release from jail as an incentive. This will surely help prevent recidivism and encourage the ex-offenders to become responsible citizens of the country.
