In erstwhile Bastar, which was once the capital of the princely state of Bastar, the statue of the Gangadai Mata originated from a bamboo root when a villager was removing its tubers from the ground. Due to her origination a root, which has significant cultural connotations for the native people of Bastar, she has been given the name of Gangadai Mata. She is the sister of Danteshwari Mata. Later the statue was given a home in the form of a grand temple that we call as Gangadai Mata Mandir. The prince of Batar,Pravirchand Bhanjdev also used to come to this temple to worship Gangadai Mata. This ancient temple is of great reverence for the people from 112 villages of Bastar from the time of Bastar being a princely state. Every year a fair is held on Magh Purnima in which the deities of all 112 villages come to meet the goddess.

A natural water tank(Jal Kund)is also located in this temple complex. The water of this pool never dries up. Moreover, it is believed that many types of diseases are cured by its water. Since ancient times, the statue of Gangadai mother is bathed with the same water of this Jal kund.
