Chief Minister honors kin of Satyagrahis

Raipur 17 December 2021 / “Just like many great freedom fighters of Chhattisgarh made significant contribution in the India’s freedom struggle; our ancestors gave significant contribution in the Goa liberation movement”, said Chief Minister Mr. Bhupesh Baghel today.

Mr. Baghel paid heartfelt tributes to the ‘satyagrahis’ of Chhattisgarh who participated in the Goa Liberation Movement besides remembering their sacrifices and struggles in a programme organized as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations being held across the country to mark 75 years of Independence, at his residence office here today. He also honored the families of Satyagrahis of Chhattisgarh in this function organized by the Department of Culture.

Mr. Baghel added saying that Veer Shivaji and Sambhaji tried to drive the Portuguese out of Goa. Later on, many of our leaders including Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Mr. Madhulimye also contributed to the fight for Goa’s freedom. Along with people from across the country, our ancestors have significantly contributed in the Goan freedom struggle. A troop comprising of about 150 ‘satyagrahis’ with frontline leaders including Thakur Harinarayan Singh, Mr. Nand Kumar Pathak, Mr. Mojes Moolchand, Mr. Sharad Kumar Raizada, Mr. Balaram Joshi, Mr. Hari Prasad Sharma, and Mr. Gandhi Ram Sahu went to Goa, which later increased to 530. After a series of struggles and sacrifices, finally the 450 years of Portuguese rule came to an end.

The Chief Minister assured taking necessary steps to ensure Satyagrahis (participated in Goan freedom struggle) get Central Samman Nidhi and allotment of land after getting their demands examined.

Culture Minister Mr. Amarjeet Bhagat said on this occasion that it is a matter of pride for all of us that the ‘Satyagrahis’ of Chhattisgarh participated in the Goa Freedom Movement. Their struggles and sacrifices would always be an inspiration for us.

Remembering the contribution of Satyagrahis, Culture Secretary Mr. Anbalagan P. said that the Satyagrahis of Chhattisgarh played an important role in the integration of different parts of the country. The Satyagrahis from our state participated in the Goa Liberation War under the leadership of Abdul Rehman Farooqui and fought fiercely. This struggle, which started from 1955, lasted for about 6 years. Finally, on 19 December 1961, Goa became a part of India.

Pointing out that Chhattisgarh government has completed its three years tenure today; the Chief Minister said that it is a privilege for him to honor the families of the Satyagrahis of the Goa Liberation War on such an occasion.

The Chief Minister honored Mr. Ashish Singh Thakur, son of late Thakur Harinarayan Singh– a Satyagrahi of Goa Liberation War and grandson Upamanyu Singh, son of Late Shri Nand Kumar Pathak, Mr. Sanjay Pathak and daughter-in-law Mrs. Sandhya Pathak, son of Late Shri Mojes Moolchand, Mr. Mukesh Mojes and daughter-in-law Mrs. Eliza Shailesh Mojes, son of late Mr. Sharad Kumar Raizada, Mr. Shivendra Raizada and daughter-in-law Mrs. Nisha Raizada, son of late Mr. Balaram Joshi, Mr. Ghanshyam Joshi and daughter-in-law Mrs. Harsh Joshi and son of late Mr. Gandhi Ram Sahu, Mr. Subhash Chand Sahu and grandson Mr. Alha Ram Sahu by presenting shawl, shriphal and memento.
